Behaviour and Positive Relationships

At Rectory CofE Primary School, we have high aspirations for our children and therefore set high expectations for behaviour. Grounded in our Christian values, we believe that our approach to behaviour should reflect respect, kindness, and compassion.
Our relational approach recognises that behaviour is a form of communication. Behaviour that challenges is not seen as a choice, but as being a communication of an unmet need. We focus on understanding the underlying emotions driving behaviour and provide children with the opportunity to make amends and learn from their mistakes.
By fostering a nurturing environment built on connections, we create a school culture that supports children’s emotional wellbeing and encourages positive behaviour patterns. Our Positive Relationships approach prioritises strong, respectful connections between pupils and adults, aiming to develop a whole-school ethos of respect, nurture, and empathy. Clear, consistent behaviour expectations help all children feel safe, valued, and supported to thrive.
Cultivating Positive Behaviour Through Support and Celebration
Our approach to behaviour is rooted in encouragement, consistency, and care. We celebrate achievements through a range of meaningful rewards that recognise effort, kindness, and growth. Our graduated behaviour framework ensures that support and guidance are tailored to each child’s needs, promoting reflection and resilience.
Central to every classroom is our Behaviour Tree—a visual reminder of our shared values and expectations, helping children understand their choices and progress. We also embed the CHAMPS system into daily routines, providing clear expectations around Conversation, Help, Activity, Movement, Participation, and Success. This proactive strategy empowers pupils to make positive choices and understand what successful behaviour looks like in every context.
All of this is underpinned by a comprehensive behaviour policy that reflects our commitment to nurturing a respectful, inclusive, and thriving school community.
🌟 At Rectory, We CARE
Our behaviour expectations are built around the core values of CARE—Choice, Aspiration, Respect, and Expectation. We guide children to make thoughtful decisions, aim high, treat others with kindness, and hold themselves to high standards. This ethos is woven into every aspect of school life, creating a culture where positive behaviour is nurtured and celebrated.
adults across our school actively recognise and praise pupils who embody the ‘Rectory manner’—a way of being that reflects our shared commitment to kindness, responsibility, and personal growth.
