Our PSHE Curriculum has been sequenced and mapped deliberately and coherently. Through One Decision we aim to teach high quality, well thought out and knowledge rich lessons that demonstrate progression.

Intent

At Rectory C.E. Primary School, our PSHE curriculum is designed to be inclusive, meaningful, and empowering for all pupils. We aim to deliver a curriculum that enables children to know more, remember more, and understand more about themselves, others, and the world around them.

Through personal, social, health and economic education, we support our pupils in becoming:

  • 🧠 Healthy – developing physical and emotional wellbeing

  • 💪 Independent – making informed choices and managing personal development

  • 🤝 Responsible – contributing positively to society and understanding their role within it

Our curriculum helps children explore how they are growing personally and socially, while addressing the moral, social, and cultural issues they may encounter. We provide opportunities for pupils to:

  • Learn about rights, responsibilities, and diversity

  • Appreciate what it means to be part of a modern, inclusive society

  • Develop a strong sense of self-worth by playing an active role in school life and the wider community

By fostering these values, we prepare our pupils to become confident, respectful, and compassionate individuals who are ready to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

Implementation

At Rectory C.E. Primary School, we implement a carefully structured PSHE curriculum using the One Decision scheme, which is fully aligned with the National Curriculum and supports the development of the whole child. This comprehensive programme ensures consistency across all year groups and provides age-appropriate content that builds progressively from Reception to Year 6.

The One Decision scheme enables pupils to explore a wide range of key themes, including:

  • Physical and emotional wellbeing

  • Relationships and friendships

  • Online safety and digital resilience

  • Managing risks and making informed choices

  • Financial education and economic understanding

  • British Values and citizenship

  • Diversity, equality, and inclusion

  • Mental health and coping strategies

  • Puberty and growing up

Lessons are delivered weekly by class teachers and are designed to be interactive, reflective, and inclusive. The scheme uses video-based scenarios, discussion prompts, and open-ended activities to encourage pupils to think critically, express their views, and develop empathy and emotional intelligence.

The spiral nature of the curriculum ensures that key concepts are revisited and deepened over time, allowing pupils to build on prior learning and apply their knowledge in real-life contexts. The programme also supports the development of Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural (SMSC) understanding and promotes the core principles of British Values throughout.

  • PSHE is further embedded across the wider curriculum and school life through:

    • Whole-school and class assemblies linked to PSHE themes

    • Circles

    • Displays that reinforce key messages and celebrate diversity

    • Cross-curricular links that highlight personal development in all subjects

    • Opportunities for pupil voice, leadership, and community involvement

Through this consistent and engaging approach, we ensure that all pupils are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they need to thrive as healthy, respectful, and responsible citizens.

Impact

At Rectory C.E. Primary School, the impact of our PSHE curriculum—delivered through the One Decision programme—is evident in the confidence, empathy, and maturity with which our pupils approach their personal development and relationships.

By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils:

  • 🧠 Demonstrate a secure understanding of how to stay safe, healthy, and make informed decisions

  • 🗣️ Communicate their feelings effectively and show empathy towards others

  • 🤝 Show respect for diversity and understand the importance of equality and inclusion

  • 🧭 Apply their knowledge of British Values and citizenship in real-life contexts

  • 💬 Engage in thoughtful discussions, showing confidence in expressing opinions and listening to others

  • 🌱 Reflect on their personal growth and demonstrate resilience and self-awareness

Through regular opportunities for discussion, reflection, and real-life application, pupils develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they need to navigate the complexities of modern life. The consistent use of One Decision ensures progression and depth, preparing our children to become respectful, responsible, and active members of society. Alongside One Decision, we enhance learning through No Outsiders, Think Equal, and Chameleon PDE—providing depth, diversity, and real-life relevance across all key stages.
